Watch The Confederations Cup 2009 Semi-Finals

An astonishing last day in the Group B games means that the Confederations Cup semi-finals will be Spain v USA, and Brazil v South Africa.

I did say that it was still mathematically possible for the USA to qualify, even after being thoroughly beaten by both Brazil and Italy. In contrast, Egypt had exceeded all expectations, almost taking a point from the Brazilians then beating Italy. The Egyptians were just a draw away from the semis and yet it was the Americans who showed the determination and desire to go for the win. With the half-time scores being 3-0 to Brazil and 1-0 to the USA had those been the final scores Italy would have gone through. The USA needed to beat Egypt by more than they lost to Italy (3-1) - and they did it!

The Italians have been poor, just as they were in Euro 2008. The current side has many of the players who won the World Cup but that was back in 2006 and three years on the side looks slow and lacking ideas. Their manager, Lippi, must rue the day he accepted to manage the national side for a second time - sainthood can only be bestowed once and is easily lost.

So, barring another huge upset in this Confederations Cup, the final looks likely to be many people's predictions when the tournament started: Spain versus Brazil. They are easily the two best sides in this competition and should be a great final, somewhat overcoming many pundits' feelings that this is a lame and slightly pointless tournament. It doesn't have the prestige of the World Cup proper but the desire to win on the faces of the players shows this is much more than a friendly training session.

Team USA are in a strange position regarding the popularity of football in the US. I don't think it really helps that Americans insist on calling it soccer. The USA are currently ranked 14th in the FIFA world rankings. Sure, this is slightly flattering as they play a lot of dreadful teams, but they won the CONCACAF Cup beating Mexico, who are themselves ranked 26th. The USA national team has come a long way in the last ten years, but how many football fans are there in America?

This Confederations Cup seems to have done a world of good to South Africa's image in hosting next year's World Cup, as well as to their team's spirit in hoping to progress beyond the group stages. Let's hope it will also show Americans that this is a global sport in which they can be proud of their team... and support it.

The Italians seem to have woken up that this is a real tournament and that they are here as reigning World Cup winners, rather than being on holiday. Admittedly, the weather is probably better in Italy than in South Africa but they'll have to get used to it as they're coming back in 2010. Egypt gave the Brazilians a good run for their money but unless the Azzuri repeat their first-half performance against the USA it is hard to see the African champions taking this precious scalp. As is often the case, it really boils down to the Italian attitude on the day.

We've all seen the adverts: Get 2000 TV Channels Free on Your PC! You may have even seen the websites, promising unlimited viewing of television channels from around the world. No more satellite dish, no more cable subscription, all the entertainment you could possibly want just a click away, on your computer and, of course, for free.

Well, almost free, as in order to join this internet TV revolution you just need to pay a one-off fee to get a fantastic piece of software that gives you access to all those channels. This can cost anywhere from about $49 up to $129 or so. Seems too good to be true? So where's the catch?

Like so many things on the internet this is not so much a scam as playing on people's ignorance. This software does, indeed, do what it claims. What the sellers don't tell you is that you can get he same service absolutely free!

The software for sale at these 'Satellite TV on your PC' sites do just two simple things. Firstly, they give you links to existing free streamed TV channels. There are thousands of legitimate TV stations that have internet feeds and these can easily be accessed for free from a number of internet TV websites. Absolutely no need for an extra piece of software. All you need to do is bookmark existing internet TV websites, such as WorldTVPC. You can search for others.

The second thing that these TV-on-your-PC sites do is search for individual programmes from existing P2P services. If you want to watch an episode of your favourite soap or comedy or sci-fi series, it will search file sharing networks such as LimeWire and others. You will still need to download and install each P2P software so, yet again, all you would be paying for is an extra interface level.

In short, the 'Satellite TV on your PC' software does nothing that you cannot already do. If you're really interested in watching TV on your computer then just bookmark existing streamed TV channels and look through what is on offer. And if you really want to download individual programmes then the P2P file sharing networks are the places to go.

Tired of looking at rubbish blogs promising free live football but filled with nothing but adverts?

Bored with having to look at spam being posted everywhere about free live sports channels?

Is there really such a thing as free live streamed sports?

Well, it really isn't that much of a secret! But looking at all the messages that fill the internet every weekend for the English Premier League, Serie A, Bundesliga and more, one would think there was some great secret that only these people know about. It is becoming as ridiculous as all the spam for medicines like Viagra. Well, let me tell you the secret - there isn't one!

If you're lucky you will end up on a website that has done a search and found a few links. If you're unlucky you'll end up on a site with nothing but adverts and potentially some malware to thank you for your visit. Avoid the grief and save yourself some time. You can also read here the reality of trying to watch live internet football.

If you're interested in watching a football or soccer match then there are just a few sites you'll need to bookmark.

Firstly bet365 and bwin actually show some live games. Opening an account is free and you don't need to bet anything, just sit back and enjoy the game. These are the best options as you will get a high quality feed.

Then there are the internet TV networks. You've seen those adverts too I suspect - watch thousands of free TV channels for a one-off fee. Don't bother paying the fee as all these sites do is give you a bit of software to check the very same TV networks. Why pay for ignorance when now you know where to go?

So where are these? Here is a short list to get you started.

OK, that's enough to be getting on with. There are more but then you'll just end up with lots of duplicate channels - if you really want to know just search for them.

On these you will find a mixture of corporate channels, national and local TV channels, as well as the odd internet entrepreneur for whom YouTube is not good enough and they want their own TV station. You will also find lots of minority sports channels and a huge range of other channels.

So, if you want to watch a particular football match, or whatever sport you fancy, just go and search within those internet TV networks. Sometimes, you may end up watching the right game but with a foreign language commentary - oh well, that's free for you! Some channels only transmit at certain times so just read their schedule or do a search close to the game.

If you don't have some kind of braodband connection and you want to watch live sports on the internet then... forget it! Some networks do, however, also have radio channels so you may well be able to listen to the commentary - hopefully in your own language this time! Audio channels take up far less bandwidth than audio-video channels.

If you're really stuck and your internet connection is steam-powered then you can always watch football text commentaries at Yahoo Sports. Sad, I know!

So, don't pay any money to get thousands of free internet TV channels... because they're free! Don't go to any suspect sites unless you know your computer is well protected. Spam works because there are always going to be people who will click them. Now, you don't have to.

Introduction to Free Internet TV Channels

Welcome to the strange world of internet TV channels. You thought satellite TV had hundreds of channels of crap, well now there are thousands! But the good part is that you don't have to pay anything to watch them - finally we have free TV. OK, you've got pay for a broadband connection but chances are you've got that already.

I'll update this intro as I go along but just to say that I'll be listing both corporate media channels such as news as well as the bizarre and funny private channels. I'm not yet sure whether to list YouTube channels as they have enough advertising already. I think one of the great things of internet TV is the ability to watch, say, a news channel when you're travelling. You never know what your hotel will be showing but most now have wi-fi so you can now watch whatever you want - just don't forget the laptop.

Note that not all TV channels broadcast 24/7 but most will either have a schedule or you can sign up to receive an email alert when the TV channel will next be transmitting.

So as not to keep repeating Free Internet TV Channels I may sometimes abbreviated to FITC (pronounced "fits"). I think that's highly appropriate.
